The Forbidden Papyrus

The Forbidden Papyrus: dialogue with the skeleton guardian

Project Name

The Forbidden Papyrus

Type

3D game for Windows

Genre

Dungeon crawler / adventure

Built with

Unity 6, C#

Context

University project, solo

The Forbidden Papyrus is a 3D dungeon crawler built in Unity. You play as a treasure hunter who enters a cave in search of a legendary scroll. Inside, an immortal skeleton guards the Papyrus behind a riddle, a trapped wizard asks for your help, a zombie blocks the exit until you bring him four keys, and rival treasure hunters attack on sight.

I made it as a solo university project: I designed the game and its story, built the levels, and wrote all the gameplay code in C#, from the player controller and the enemy AI to the dialogue, inventory and door systems. The 3D models come from free Unity Asset Store packs. The game can be downloaded and played on Windows without installing anything.

What I did

Game design, level building and all the gameplay programming in C#: player movement, enemy AI, the dialogue and inventory systems, doors and keys, health and death screen, music, menus and credits.

Key features

  • Third-person movement: walking, sprinting and jumping with camera-relative controls, custom gravity and smooth rotation, using Unity’s Input System and Character Controller.
  • Enemy AI: two kinds of enemies that use NavMesh to chase the player: one keeps its distance and shoots on a cooldown, the other attacks up close with a bat whose hitbox is timed with animation events.
  • Dialogue system: reusable NPC conversations with portraits, names and choices, used for the skeleton’s riddle, the wizard and the zombie, and able to trigger game events such as giving items or opening doors.
  • Inventory & collectibles: keys, scrolls and collectibles tracked on screen, with locked doors that check the inventory before opening.
  • Doors: animated doors that detect from which side the player approaches and open the right way.
  • Health, music & menus: health bar and death screen with retry, chase music that starts when an enemy spots the player, a boss theme, footstep sounds, main menu with options and controls, and an end credits scene.

Play it

The game is available as a standalone Windows build: download it from the game repository and run it, no installation needed. The full Unity project with all the source code is in a separate repository. Controls: W A S D to move, Shift to sprint, Space to jump, F to interact and the mouse to look around.
